Statement on the recent violence in the Syrian coast
Baytna strongly condemns the recent wave of violence and killings in the coastal regions of Latakia, Tartous, and Jableh, where hundreds of civilians have been massacred in military operations against remnants of the former regime. Likewise, Baytna condemns the actions of regime “spoilers” who continue to target civilians while seeking to further destabilize the country.
We call on the Syrian state and the interim government to take immediate and decisive action to protect civilians, criminalize acts of revenge, and ensure justice and accountability in all security operations. Given the extent of disinformation and external agendas, we call on the Syrian interim government to work with civil society actors to appoint an independent investigative committee. This committee should be empowered to investigate crimes, regardless of the perpetrators, and serve as a source of truth for all Syrians. Those found to be guilty of murder must be prosecuted in courts of law.
The ongoing cycle of bloodshed and destruction must end. The interim government must conduct its security measures while fully adhering to human rights, with a clear commitment to safeguarding civilian lives. Field executions and acts of retaliation only deepen divisions and prolong suffering. The state is responsible for upholding justice, ensuring fair and transparent investigations, and holding perpetrators of violence accountable, regardless of their affiliations.
We also call on Syrian civil society to raise its voice in solidarity with those communities under fire. We must publicly demand an end to the violence and advocate for the protection of all Syrians. Now, more than ever, collective action is needed to put an end to atrocities and work toward a peaceful, just, and rights-based resolution.
Baytna remains committed to advocating for human rights, dignity, and freedom for all Syrians. We urge all actors to stand against injustice, support efforts to establish accountability, and ensure that the voices of Syrian citizens are heard and respected.
