Research Paper on Women, Peace and Security in Syria

15 November, 2022 - United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security (UNSCR 1325) affirms the importance of women’s participation and the inclusion of gender perspectives in peace negotiations, humanitarian planning, peacekeeping operations, and post-conflict peacebuilding and governance. It is rooted in the premise that women can actively contribute to peace and security, and it emphasizes the importance of empowering women to lead and actively participate in conflict prevention and resolution as well as addressing the effects of sexual violence.

UNSCR 1325 also encourages the development and implementation of measures and standards to monitor delegated powers toward women, peace, and security, emphasizing the importance of providing training and capacity-building to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment as well as more comprehensive integration with civil society.

Furthermore, international agreements, covenants, and declarations related to women's participation, particularly the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), are important documents to serve as a reference to ensure women's rights and freedoms in times of peace and war.

Thus, many international, regional, and national women's and feminist organizations focus on women's political participation in the context of women, peace, and security, in accordance with UNSCR 1325.
